Sie gehören zu den Wimpertierchen oder Ciliaten, so genannt nach ihren hunderten von Trillhärchen, die die Wand dieser einzelligen Organismen teilweise ganz bedecken. Dieser Krankheitserreger bekommt seine Gelegenheit sich einzunisten dadurch, dass der Widerstand der Fische geschwächt ist, z. B. nach einem Transport, bei Überbesetzung, nach teilweisem Wasserwechsel oder nach der Zusetzung von neuerworbenen Fischen und Pflanzen. Man sieht bei diesen erkrankten Fischen weiße Pünktchen in der Größe von 0,1 bis 1 mm verteilt über den ganzen Körper oder dicht beieinander.
